I turned up at Ashness gate Jetty on Derwentwater's south east shore hoping to capture dusk, only to find a fisherman there. He was there first, so I thought that was it...until I spotted this tree not 40 yards away. I used my Lee 0.9 stop grad filter.

Copyright Susan Ogden Church of the Mystic Light......really. That was the name of this place years ago. It has seen better days. All kinds of stories circulated around this place...the most popular, likely coined by high school kids was that it was a place of devil worship! Perhaps witches...who knows. There was never anyone there on Sundays...there was no place to park, save a dirt driveway. The lawn was mostly knee high weeds, and occasionally you would see some young adults attempting to cut them down. It has been sitting empty now for years...the little bell tower is falling apart...windows are broken and the peeling paint litters the floor. There are chairs there...and an old piano, the lectern stands on the alter with an open hymn book and a checkbook full of old checks, never used, with the imprinted name Church of the Mystic Light! Strangely enough, altho this place is less than 5 minutes up the road from where i live...and i have passed it hundred of times, i have never been inside because it did not look like you could get in! Turns out, another photographer i met happened to ask about it and i told him it was near where i lived and that i have never gone in because it looked like there WAS no way into it. “The front door is open!” he said, “i have been in it!” We finished shooting another place that afternoon so on my way home we stopped and went in. This is what is left of the Mystic Light!
